How to Compress Images Without Losing Quality

A photo straight off a modern phone camera is often 4โ8MB. That is far more data than any website, email or upload form actually needs, and oversized images are the single most common reason web pages load slowly.
Compression usually cuts that to a few hundred kilobytes with no difference you can see. Here is how to do it properly, and how to pick the right settings.

What quality setting should you use?
- 80% โ the sweet spot. Visually identical to the original for almost all photos, typically 60โ80% smaller.
- 60โ70% โ for web images where speed matters more than perfection. Slight softening in fine detail.
- 90%+ โ for print, portfolios, or images that will be edited further.
- Below 50% โ only when you truly need the tiniest file. Compression artefacts become visible.
JPEG, WebP or PNG โ which to pick?
WebP is the best default for the web. It produces files roughly 25โ30% smaller than JPEG at the same visual quality, and every modern browser supports it.
JPEG is the safe universal choice โ pick it when the file needs to work with older software, or when an upload form specifically requires .jpg.
PNG should only be used when you need a transparent background or you are compressing a screenshot with sharp text and flat colour. For photographs, PNG produces much bigger files for no visual benefit โ converting a PNG photo to JPEG or WebP is often where the biggest savings come from.
Common size limits worth knowing
- YouTube thumbnails โ 2MB maximum. A compressed JPEG comfortably fits.
- Gmail attachments โ 25MB total across all files.
- Most job application portals โ 1โ2MB per document or photo.
- Website images โ aim for under 200KB per image for fast loading.
