The correct YouTube thumbnail dimensions
- Resolution: 1280 × 720 pixels (this is the recommended and maximum useful size).
- Aspect ratio: 16:9 — the same shape as the video player.

Why your uploaded thumbnail looks blurry
The most common cause is uploading an image smaller than 1280×720 — YouTube stretches it to fit, and stretching a small image is what creates that soft, pixelated look. Always design at the full 1280×720.
The second cause is exceeding the 2MB file limit and being forced to export at low quality. If your finished thumbnail is over 2MB, do not drop the resolution — instead compress the file. A good image compressor gets a detailed 1280×720 PNG comfortably under 2MB while keeping it razor sharp.
