How to Download Videos and GIFs from X (Twitter)

X (formerly Twitter) has no download button, and posts disappear fast — deleted by the poster, removed by moderation, or hidden when an account goes private. If you want to keep a video or GIF, you have to save it from the public link.

GIFs on X are actually videos
When you save a "GIF" from X, you get an MP4 rather than a .gif file. That is not a bug — X converts every GIF to a short, silent MP4 when it is uploaded, because MP4 is far smaller and smoother. The MP4 you download plays anywhere and drops straight into any video editor.
If you specifically need an actual .gif file (for example to use as a forum avatar), you would convert the MP4 afterwards — but for reposting or editing, the MP4 is what you want.
